EXPLORING MUSIC VIDEOS

I am going to explore 4 very different music videos from a documentary shown in a lesson. 1 www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUiTQvTOW_O SINEAD O'CONNOR-NOTHING COMPARES TO YOU This music video is about a relationship between a mother and daughter. The lyrics "nothing compares you to you" demonstrates they had a close relationship. The music video is very personal as it is a close up of Sinead's face through most of the video, for example: This could be to give a clearer view of her facial expression and to express the emotion of the video in a more intense way. Also it could suggest that she is singing the song directly to her as she is making eye contact with the camera throughout the video. 2 http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?next_url=http%3A//www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Df4Mc-NYPHaQ QUEEN-I WANT TO BREAK FREE This pop music video represents women wanting rights and to be "free" but they have presented this in a humurous way by using men dressed as women (Queen). For example: They show the "women" at home cleaning whilst the men are on stage, this could suggest that men were allowed more freedom than women. I feel the importance of costume is particulary important in this video and it is what creates the meaning.I would really like to use this idea of changing roles in my music video 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_MuUcxHATo&ob=av3e MICHAEL JACKSON-THRILLER This pop music video tells a spooky story about zombies waking from the dead and the main character (Michael Jackson) also turning into a zombie. This main running theme of this music video is horror/scary/gruesome.This is mainly portrayed with make up and costume. One of the main appeals about this music video is the incredible dance routines which have been famous for 28 years. The dancing I feel is a real feature in the video and has insprired me to want to have a dance routine in my video.I really like the production side of this video and I feel it keeps a audience interested. Also, the costumes have really inspired me to take on a challenge and become creative when choosing costumes. 4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJLIiF15wjQ SPICE GIRLS-WANNABE This pop music video is about the importance of friendship and to value friends before a relationship with a man. This music video was taken in one shot, however it is made appealing by dance routines, constant changes of scenes and the quick movements in the video. The narrative being about "girl power" which was what the spice girls were known for, is represented by the girls walking around a house and showing them to be in charge for example Sporty Spice performing a back flip on a table, this shows rebellious behaviour.Another example is Baby Spice shaking the young mans hair which is shown in the still image below.I think this was done to support the idea of the girls intimidating men and showing that their friendship is more important.
